We had a little bit of an “oops moment” yesterday!
As I leverage this platform to share all professional highs; it’s only fair to also come here on and be able to share some oops!
We were running a JENGAFICATION workshop yesterday for our client. Yesterday was the second in-person session of the 3-month hybrid journey. (Excitedly bought new Jenga blocks and everything)
So we divided the Jenga blocks into 3 categories- Odd Numbers, Even Numbers, and Special Twists. Each time the participant pulled out an odd-numbered block, they were to answer a question from that category. Similarly, across the other two categories of Evens and Special Twists, too.
The activity instructions were given out. And there began the unboxing of the brand new Jenga kits. Plastic wrappers were being excitedly ripped open… you get the gist.
Here comes the oops!
I noticed that while the blocks looked colourful and pretty, they didn’t have any numbers on them! Oh boy… and then there were two dice in the kits…. wait, what? Since when did they start making Jenga like that?
A little flabbergasted at first…
Quickly, I went out to admit the oversight first. And then tweaked the game plan instantly. Instead of numbers, the now revised instructions were on the basis of colour.
So each time the participant pulled out a Yellow block, we read a question from the Odds category.
Each time they pulled an Orange, we read a question from the Evens category.
And each time they pulled out a Blue, we’d add the Special Twists.
And as for the dice, the participants rolled the die, and that indicated which colour block they had to pull out in that round.
Phew, what a save!
Anyway, all’s well that ends well I guess? Happy to report that while we did flag off with a rocky start, the rest of the workshop and the ending were absolutely smooth and profound.
My learning from this:
As much an adrenaline rush as this was; I’m now ALWAYS going to unbox all new props and toys, and double check them before bringing them into the session
